All About Baby Acne

What Baby Acne Really Is...

Almost a third of all babies develop baby acne. "Baby acne" is is really three different types of acne in newborns and infants.

The first is neonatal milia which are like multiple tiny whiteheads on the face of newborns. This is an extremely common condition and nearly half of all newborns will have some degree of neonatal milia.

The second type is neonatal acne. This type of acne appears at birth or shortly after birth, and looks more like teenage acne -- the typical pimples you're used to. The third type of baby acne is Infantile acne. It usually occurs in three to four month old babies and looks like regular acne with blackheads, whitehead, pimples and pustules. Infantil acne could last 2 to 3 years.

The Pattern of Baby Acne

Baby Acne usually develops at 3 weeks of age, though it may be present from the time of delivery. Male babies are more often affected than female babies.

The most common found in infants are papules and pustules. Papules are small solid rounded red bumps rising from the skin similar to a red pimple. Pustules or whiteheads are a small bump in the skin that has a collection of pus.

Babies commonly develop acne in and around the face, including the cheeks and on the scalp. This acne usually goes away after about four months, so most babies don't need any treatment.
